Using a machete to
hold the hot bowl steady, Olivia Gualinga applies Shilquilu tree sap resin
to the surface to seal it. The result is almost like a glaze in appearance,
but is really more like a varnish. The resin is fairly durable, and waterproofs
the porous clay surface. Bowls like this are used for drinking chicha,
a fermented yuca (manioc) drink. Chicha is a staple in the Quichua diet.
